SCIENCE NON-FICTION SECTION

SCIENCE NON-FICTION SECTION

This is a part of the scientific series which launched at the Pałacowe cinema in September 2019, and will continue until June 2020. The advances of technology inspire various fears about our future, and the Science Non-Fiction Section is a splendid opportunity to see two thought-provoking documentaries which inquire into the technological development today, two pictures in which robots are deceptively similar to people, while the question why we need humanoid robots returns like a mantra in the background.

1.    HI, A.I.
dir. Isabella Willinger, Germany, 2019, 87’

The robot protagonist we are introduced to in the film looks for all intents and purposes like a very attractive woman, who develops as a person and engages in long conversations with her human companion.  In the family of a scientist, another robot is being “brought up” who, surprisingly enough, becomes the favourite of the family’s matriarch.

2.    DO YOU TRUST THIS COMPUTER?
dir. Chrisa Paine, Japan, 2018, 78’

When a new type of self-learning computers is constructed, one cannot help but ask: will they usher in a new era or are they an invention which spells the end of the humankind? The film shows the sinister facet of technology and the risks involved in the emergence of artificial intelligence.
